Five For Fighting Superman

Many have conquered Baja before but none have gone through the whole nine yards (one thousand miles) on an ATV. Even for an professional ATV rider like Richie "Superman" Brown, it wasn't a walk in the park...

For anyone else, 1,000 miles would seem like such an impossible feat. That's Baja for you. it's true that many have completed the Baja feat on many different types of vehicles including the buggies, bikes and trucks of different models, makes and types, no one have ever completed the Baja feat on an ATV. Not everyone is meant to finish the Baja on an ATV and yet one man did…Richie “Superman” Brown finished the cross-country track to Baja and back. For his Superman feat, he earned a place in our history books as the first ATV rider to ever complete the Baja.

How did Richie “Superman” Brown do it?
In 39 hours, Richie “Superman” Brown went on the 2,318 mile cross-country trekking expedition on his Honda TRX450R…alone to Baja, which runs for more or less 1,050 miles.

A simple country man obsessed with ATVing
Richie Brown is a pretty down-to-earth simple man who was born and bred in a small place called Dahlonega , Georgia . We heard from the grapevine that this ATV superhero would prefer to tool around in his home or spend time on his automotive bearing manufacturer business than go anywhere out of the place. The adventurous nature in Richie Brown will only come alive when he's ready for a race or has his ATV packed on the back of his truck. As you can see it, what helped this man achieve what he did with Baja is his passion for ATV. And his formula for success, we would like to say, is a lot of passion, a dash of luck, tons of practice and experience, calmness and steely endurance, ability to think even when body is about fall apart, and love from the Man above.

Richie Brown was inspired to try getting through Baja on his ATV after watching Mouse McCoy do it alone on his bike and it dawned on him that no one has ever done Baja on an ATV before and from then on, the idea persistently haunted him until he caved and decided to “Hell, let's do it!”

With comfort and reliability in mind, Richie Brown stripped his Honda TRX450R down to the bare skeleton and started ground-up. He modified the ATV from suspension components, motor, valves, springs, hoses, lighting, auto clutch, tires, bars, and exhaust….etc. After completing revamping his ATV, Richie Brown meticulously sat down and inspected every part of the ATV to make sure that the ATV could travel the distance. As tough as Baja is for the ATV rider, it's even worse for the ATV.

The man and his machine went through a lot for the two days they traveled Baja. Although Baja is known for its haunting stories, Richie Brown and his crew were inundated by dust, rocks, busted tires, tiredness and sleepiness, hunger instead. No ghosts. Due to numerous busted tires because of the rocks along Baja, Richie Brown had to travel at an uncharacteristically slow pace for quite a fair bit because at one point, there was no change of tire available. He revealed that his arms, hands, shoulders and wrists went through tremendous stress. In order to keep at it, he kept his energy level up by consuming Power Bars while riding his ATV (Kids, don't do this at home. You are NOT Richie Brown), stopped for breaks without sleeping along the way and kept a positive mind.

But he had a reliable ATV with him, a crew who endured it along with him and also sponsors he couldn't disappoint. Well, Superman, all we can say is…gloves off to you!
