I've successfully bought and sold comic books for over 15 years. I often get asked about making money in comics and if buying and selling comics can be a good source of income. Candidly, I'd say that yes it can be, but don't quit your day job. There are too many ups and downs in the market. And if you don't know what you're doing you can lose your shirt (or blouse). However, if someone challenged me to turn $1000 into $10,000 doing nothing but buying and selling comic books on eBay. Here's what I'd do. First of all, I would spend my $1000 buying up prime conditioned, mainstream comic book titles that just about anyone anywhere on the planet would recognize. I would concentrate on the big 4 --- Batman, Superman, Spider-Man or X-Men. These comics are the most popular on eBay and typically sell more quickly...and at higher prices...than just about any other titles. Sure, there are a few exceptions but these four titles are the "blue chip stocks" of comic books. I'd fight the urge to think like a "collector" and would instead think like a "dealer" and buy nothing else but these four titles...and I'd concentrate on titles published in the 1960s, 1970, and 1980s. Let me be clear. I would NOT buy Flash, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four or any of the other comic books they are making into movies these days. They just don't have the following of the big 4. I would NOT buy any other X-titles....nothing is as popular with comic buyers as the original X-men....no matter what you may read to the contrary. I would NOT buy fly-by-night so-called "hot" comics with big breasted, half-naked women in tight outfits on the cover. No, no,. no. Just the big 4. Secondly, I would buy the big 4 in the best condition I could find them. I would look for comics that had tight covers. Tight spines. Comic books that anyone would be proud to own. I would make sure they were NOT slabbed / CGC coded and then pay to have these comics slabbed and CGC coded. This validates their condition and gives this comic terrific credibility when it comes time to sell. Thirdly, once I did all this, these would be then be comic books that I'd be ready to sell on eBay. I'd set a reserve price -- even though most times you shouldn't. I'd do this to ensure that when they sold, they sold at the price I wanted -- not the low ball price. Frankly, sometimes, they'd sell and sometimes they wouldn't. However, I'd be persistent and keep at this until I got the price I wanted. And if I've done my homework, this should be a piece of cake. Finally, I'd repeat this process I've laid it out here to as many times as it took to get to 10 grand. Alan LaMont has bought and sold comics successfully for over 15 years.
