How To Draw Comic Books

Cartoonists should be able to make serious drawings. It is a mistake to think that good comic drawing can be done without first knowing how to draw well in general.

To be able to draw graceful lines, to have an understanding of human anatomy and to grasp the fundamental laws of perspective will enable an artist to draw better cartoons later on.

The demand for high quality cartoons and comic drawings is so great that the artist who is competent to do this work can make a profitable career out of it.

Expression in Comics

The inner workings of the human mind are expressed in the face. The gesture of limbs and pose of the body further refine emotion. The comic artist adds to this natural display with external indicators. For example, to intensify a glare the artists projects a dotted line from the eye to the object the character is looking at. Hair is drawn standing on end to show fright. How often have you ever actually seen hair stand on end? These external clues are key to cartooning.

This method of external clues, somewhat forcing the effect, saves the reader from having to think too much. Thus is a successful cartoon.

Another method of cartoon drawing is distortion. The head and feet are drawn disproportionately large, giving a comic effect. Done with proper perspective, this effect is dramatic and renders a formal drawing into a cartoon all by itself.
